Sinta Penyami Storms is an Indonesian dance artist, visionary, community leader, and activist who nourishes and promotes dance, fashion, cuisine, and other aspects of Indonesian tradition. In 2011, she founded Modero Dance Company to promote her art and provide a safe space for the Indonesian community. Beyond sustaining the Indonesian community’s creative economy, Modero dancers actively engage with social justice issues like racial and gender equality, immigration, and workers’ rights.
An award-winning artist, Sinta has received the Leeway Transformation Award (2021) and the Philadelphia Cultural Treasures Fellowship (2022). In 2021, she co-founded Gapura, aiming to honor traditions, empower the community, and uncover dreams within Philadelphia’s Indonesian-American community. Gapura offers free community classes in music (Gamelan Gita Santi) and dance (Modero), social services, and hosts the annual Island Country Indonesian Festival, drawing thousands of Indonesian diasporas and the public.
Sinta wears many hats: as Leeway Foundation’s Senior Operations Manager, Gapura’s volunteer Director, and founder of Modero Dance Company, she’s a force in her South Philly community.
